POSITION SUMMARY

The Peer Support Specialist provides outreach, on-going support and recovery assistance to children and youth receiving services under Lifespan Clinical and Youth programming.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalence preferred.

  • Must possess expertise in recovery and the ability to demonstrate own effort at self-directed recovery.

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.

  • Must meet eligibility requirements for MDHHS State Peer Support Specialist Certification:

  • Young Adult, ages 18 through age 26, with lived experience who received mental health services as a youth.

  • Experience receiving services as a youth in complex, child serving systems preferred (behavioral health, child welfare, juvenile justice, special education).

  • Trained in the Michigan Department of Mental Health and Human Services approved curriculum and ongoing training model.

     

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide coordination, services and assistance that will allow the youth to become independent. May provide group co-therapy and co-facilitate psycho-educational groups.

  • May provide consultation and education to individuals, groups and families and use problem solving techniques with the objective of assisting children and youth in improving or maintaining levels of functioning. Assists client in developing social skills. Model effective coping techniques and self-help strategies.

  • Assist youth in developing self-determination and empowerment skills through self-advocacy. Be able to identify youth stresses, instability and provide appropriate support.

  • Participate as a support system assuring that clients are actively involved in the planning process. Participates with team in linking of children/youth to internal and/or external supports.

  • Maintains a flexible work schedule to meet the needs of the children/youth.

  • Participates in staff meeting and debriefings with team. Documents all services provided in a timely manner and in compliance with the agency’s quality assurance plan.
