Typically, all positions will begin being paid at the beginning of pay range listed above.

Incumbents are responsible for day-to-day operation of a Public Transit bus.

REPORTING STRUCTURE:

Receives direction from Transit Supervisor or higher-level management staff.

This position is driving essential (see driving requirements below).

Typical Class Essential Duties

  1. Operates all types of buses assigned for the purpose of transporting passengers.

  2. Safely boards and discharges passengers, including operating a wheelchair lift.

  3. Memorizes routes, transfer points, and fare structures. Adheres to time schedules and routes.

  4. Receives and verifies payments; may handle cash. Follows internal procedures for accurate accountability with cash handling tasks.

  5. Conducts routine pre/post safety inspections of bus to ensure the proper condition and appearance of bus and equipment. Reports to supervisor when routine and non-routine maintenance is needed.

  6. Performs routine cleaning tasks, including sweeping, emptying trash, and cleaning interior windows, on bus(es).

  7. Maintains basic records of passenger counts and daily fares received.

  8. Provides general customer service and communicates with the public regarding fees, policies, rules, schedules, routes, transfer points, and general information about transit operations.

  9. Represents the City of Casper by responding to the public, citizens, its employees, and others in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner while continuously maintaining a positive customer service demeanor.

  10. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Knowledge (position requirements at entry):

Knowledge of:

• Customer service principles.

• Defensive driving techniques.

• Radio communication systems.

• Applicable Federal, State, and local traffic laws and regulations.

• Department of Transportation (DOT) rules and regulations.

• Current transit operating policies, directives, and procedures, including emergency response.

• Federal Transportation Administration (FTA) rules and regulations regarding safety-sensitive positions, including pre-employment and random drug/alcohol testing.

• City geography including street names, number systems, directional orientation, and major landmarks.

• Standard safety practices and procedures.

Abilities (position requirements at entry):

Ability to:

• Work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.

• Maintain punctual and regular attendance to provide dependable service to the public.

• Provide exceptional customer service by attending to the needs of a diverse customer base in a sensitive manner.

• Operate voice radio equipment.

• Comply with Federal and Wyoming traffic laws.

• Comply with transit operating policies, directives, and procedures.

• Safely operate all models and sizes of transit buses.

• Remain calm and drive safely regardless of passenger, traffic, and weather challenges.

• Assist in loading and unloading passengers and operate and/or utilize all standard safety equipment installed in transit passenger vehicles, including: safety harnesses, restraints, and wheelchair lifts. Report hazardous or dangerous conditions along bus route and at passenger boarding areas.

• Identify different amounts and denomination of money.

• Maintain confidentiality.

• Routinely practice the City of Casper core values.

• Exercise reasonable judgement in decision making.

• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

• Maintain a neat and professional appearance.

• Communicate effectively verbally and in writing, including following instructions and direction.

• Follow all City safety procedures and report all accidents/incidents immediately to supervisor.

Skills (position requirements at entry):

Skill in:

• Driving transit buses safely, including in inclement weather.

• Basic math.

• Preparing clear and concise reports.

• Providing customer service.

• Addressing unruly passengers.

• Operating in a courteous, knowledgeable, and tactful manner with staff and the general public.

• Oral and written communication, are sufficient to exchange or convey effective information.

Training, Experience & Certifications

Training and Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) preferred.

• Must be at least 21 years of age.

• A minimum of one year of experience driving a bus is preferred.

Licensing and Certification Requirements (positions in this class typically require):

• Possession of valid Wyoming Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), with a passenger endorsement is required.

• Ability to pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination by obtaining a DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate for a minimum of a one (1) year qualifying period and then maintain certificate thereafter.

Driving records are required for all new employees regardless of the position's driving requirements. If the employee has not held a Wyoming driver's license for the last three years, the employee must provide at their own initiation and expense a driving record from their previous state(s) of residence.

Physical and Environmental Conditions:

City of Casper employees in data creation and modification, security sensitive or safety and protective positions are subject to pre-employment drug testing. Some employees may be subject to random drug testing if their responsibilities include:

  • Emergency response/rescue

  • Handling or working with hazardous materials, including chemicals as well as solid and liquid waste

  • Operating or maintaining water and wastewater systems

  • Writing or modifying code, maintaining or modifying City data systems including work on networks, servers, and communication systems

  • CDL operations and driving

  • Operating power-driven machinery or equipment

  • Creating or modifying health, financial, security and or risk documents or assessments

  • Working with or directing minors

Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

Incumbents in this position work primarily in the field, operating transit buses, regardless of weather conditions. Drivers are exposed to noise, fumes, and various road conditions.
