FORMULATION SCIENTIST JOB SUMMARY: Applying expertise in organic chemistry, photochemistry (primarily UV curable acrylate systems), and polymer technologies, the Formulation Scientist will develop and formulate photopolymer compositions and polymer blends and composites for use in 3D printers. He or she will build-upon and develop structure-property relationships between resin components and final properties of a fully post processed part. This position is a part of the Polymer Materials R&D team and is located at 3D Systems headquarters in Rock Hill, SC. This is a primarily in-lab position and regular remote work is not available. PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS: * Prepare, test, and qualify formulations for use in 3D printers based on photopolymerization. * Identify, blend, and qualify new raw materials for use in 3D Systems printers. * Use 3D printers to build test parts and optimize formulations. * Test and analyze raw materials and 3D printed parts. Direct responsibility for chemical testing of raw materials and formulations. * Independently plan and conduct experiments from feasibility to full product commercialization. Conduct formal DOE studies and statistical data analysis using tools such as JMP, Minitab, QuantumXL, etc. * Work with the print process team to develop and integrate newly developed materials for commercialization and participate in scale-up to production scale. * Identify potential new raw materials and coordinate evaluation with outside vendors. * Summarize data and create reports for both technical teams and senior/executive management. * Work safely and efficiently in a lab setting with minimal supervision. * *EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS: * A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in chemistry is required. Related disciplines will also be considered with relevant experience. * 0-5 years’ experience with polymer chemistry, with a strong desire for experience with photochemistry and photopolymerization * Experience with DOE tools and statistical techniques is strongly preferred. * Experience managing a flexible daily schedule based on business demands and priorities. * Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and technical communication skills. * Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail * Strong commitment to both internal and external customer satisfaction * Proven “can do” mind set: Ability to work independently and collaboratively to deliver results. * This job requires the ability to stand and work at a lab bench for an hour or more at a time. * This job requires occasional lifting of 50 lbs. from the floor to the benchtop, as well as the ability to finely manipulate clamps and other aids to setup a chemical apparatus. * The work may occasionally require the use of a fit-tested respiratory protective device. WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This job requires the ability to stand and work at a lab bench for an hour or more at a time. Occasionally, their work may require the use of a fit-tested respiratory protective equipment. Typically, the job will require occasional lifting of 50 lbs from the floor to the benchtop. It is also possible that the job may require the fine manipulation of clamps and other aids to setup a chemical apparatus.
