Turtle Bay Exploration Park Seasonal Gardener in Redding, California

SUMMARY

The Gardener, under the supervision of the Gardens Supervisor and Director of Grounds and Maintenance, is primarily responsible forassisting with the care of plants, landscape, and turf maintenance and may also assist with parking lot landscape maintenance on Turtle Bays arboretum and museum grounds. Primary responsibilities focus on the care of intensified landscapes and assistance with the care of overall gardens site.

The Gardener along with the Botanical Gardens Lead Gardener is an important Horticulture staff member for the annual holiday light show in the Botanical Gardens, Garden of Lights and any other Garden events, for all logistics pertaining to the interactions between light show elements, plants and hardscaping (i.e. pruning or moving plants for the light show elements as needed; moving pathways or irrigation if needed, etc.). Primary responsibilities focus on the care of intensified landscapes and assistance with the care of overall gardens site.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Perform plant, landscape, and/or turf maintenance under the direction of the Lead Gardener and/or Horticulture Manager.

  • Maintain hardscaping and landscaping at an acceptable level of excellence.

  • Maintain equipment and tools used by grounds and garden/horticulture staff.

  • Provide back-up assistance to Horticulture team, as requested.

  • Assist with and/or apply pesticide/herbicides under direct supervision as appropriate.

  • Understand purposes of and the ability to operate basic gardening tools, including shovel, rake, loppers, ladder, saws, blowers, mowers, pruning shears, hedgers, and other gardening equipment. Maintain tools as needed.

  • After appropriate training, or with qualified applicators license, apply and record use of pesticides, when and if necessary, with knowledge and consensus of Horticulture Manager and/or Lead Gardener.

  • Alert supervisor to new or existing maintenance or supply needs and/or safety issues.

  • Maintain a continuous awareness and knowledge of safe work practices. Carry out all work duties in compliance with safety rules.

  • Assist visitors in a friendly, professional manner.

  • Ability to work independently with periodic direction from supervisor.

    • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications **EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE** - - One (1) year education or one (1) year experience in horticulture or other related field.

  1. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of commercial landscape design, construction, maintenance and irrigation systems.

  • Familiarity with native plants of the region and knowledge of appropriate horticultural practices, landscaping principles and ornamental horticulture; turf maintenance; pesticide application and safe work practices.

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, planning, and communication skills.

  • Ability to interact effectively with the public: adults, children, volunteers, docents, teachers, parents, coworkers and management.

  • Ability to use sound judgment and work independently or with direct supervision.

  • Ability to drive a vehicle and willingness to learn any necessary heavy equipment operation.

    • Employment contingent on passing a pre-employment physical and drug screening.
