CITY OF OSHKOSH Director of Museum in OSHKOSH, Wisconsin

JOB REQUIREMENTS: This position plans, directs, and administers the overall development and operation of the Museum, including finances, capital improvements, personnel matters, management of the permanent collection, exhibition development, and all related services and activities. This position also administers the City\'s policies and programs pertaining to art in public spaces and the Landmarks Commission. The position actively participates in strategic planning for the City, directs the planning process for the Museum, and works closely with the Museum, Arts, and Culture Board to support the Museum\'s mission. The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. Management and Operations (30%): Provides leadership and direction to all programmatic areas of the Museum, including exhibition development, collections management, education, visitor services, and fund development. Manages staff members and provides appropriate guidance to the Museum, Arts, and Culture Board and Landmarks Commission. Works with City staff and others on the formation and implementation of the city-wide strategic plan and other initiatives, and works with the Museum, Arts, and Culture Board and staff to create Museum-specific strategic goals. Provides general oversight of security and stewardship of the historic Sawyer Home, ensures the Museum conforms to all legal and ethical requirements, and acts in accordance to best practices as defined by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM). Fosters a positive working relationship with other city departments to leverage resources and actively preserve the history of the City of Oshkosh. Administration (30%): Works with other city departments and leadership to create, update, and implement appropriate policies, municipal code, and museum governance documents. Develops, presents, and monitors Museum budgets, including general operating, membership, and collections as well as capital improvement project funds. Develops and administers the Art in Public Places program. Monitors and reports on trust funds and grant-funded projects. Analyzes data collected from visitor feedback for continuous improvement of exhibitions, education offerings, and membership program value. Fund Development and Community Relations (25%): Cultivates strategic partnerships with community stakeholders. Creates and implements entrepreneurial strategies for increased business revenue and donor-based fund development strategies to increase the financial stability of the Museum. Oversees the membership program and serves as the lead Museum spokesperson to media, partners, stakeholders, and the community. Explores, writes, and administers grants. Consults with donors and sponsors on funding opportunities and estate planning options, and works to build and maintain rapport with members and patrons. Creates accessible public programs and events to provide meaningful cultural experiences and increase museum relevancy. Cultural Resource Management (15%): Ensures museum-sponsored exhibitions and publications meet high standards of scholarship and are created with a broad public audience in mind. Oversees and acts at chief editor for interpretive and scholarly text. Ensures exhibit designs meet ADA/accessibility standards and best practice. Maintains high standards of historical research and documentation. ***** OTHER EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS: At least six years of experience working in a museum, including at least three in a leadership position. Demonstrated ability to manage staff at various career stages. Ability to articulate strategic plans and long-term vision for the Museum. Knowledge of museum administration and management, including general operations, budget development, and budget monitoring. Ability to be flexible and resourceful in fulfilling the mission of the Museu . Functional knowledge of collections management practices, applicable laws, and professional ethics. Demonstrated leadership skill in applying and advancing national museum standards as defined by AAM. Knowledge of museum education practices, including school-age, adult, and community programming. Ability to evaluate audience/community needs for increased and ongoing relevance of the Museum. Ability to build and maintain long-term relationships with community members and stakeholders. Ability to plan and execute strategies to increase philanthropic funding support. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Strong project management skills. Ability to publicize the cultural and social values of the Museum through presentations articles, and other means.
