Rockefeller University Fly Food Technician (**PART-TIME**) 8 hrs/wk| Fly Food Facility in New York, New York

Organization Overview

The Fly Food Facility is a facility supporting several laboratories which are using the fruit fly (Drosophila) as a model system at the Rockefeller University. Drosophila has been used for over 100 years to investigate biomedical questions ranging from the nature of the gene to the intricacies of the brain's function. The technicians duty is to routinely perform a medium scale preparation of fruit fly culture media. It also involves some operational tasks of the facility. The preferred applicant would commit to at least several years to support the long-term research goals of these fruit fly laboratories.

Overview

We are looking to hire a part-time Fly Food Technician (approximately 8 hours for a full day per week, preferably on a full day between Monday and Thursday) to assist with making standard fruit fly culture media for labs on campus. There is a possibility of increasing time and work responsibilities over time.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include:

  • Preparing standard fruit fly culture media, following established recipes and protocols

  • Dispensing the prepared fruit fly culture media into containers of various types and package these containers into trays

  • Operating the instruments used for media preparation and food dispensing

  • Organizing, clean, and maintain the Fly Food Facility lab space, instruments, and equipment

  • Maintaining a fruit fly culture media inventory and order records for fruit fly laboratories

  • Occasionally delivering weekly freshly made fruit fly culture media orders to fruit fly laboratories on campus

  • Implementing and optimizing new media recipes based on evolving laboratory needs

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • High School diploma required

  • Must be able one full-day (7-8 hours) between Monday to Thursday

  • Must be able to accurately follow fly food cooking protocol

  • Diligent and can make sure that sufficient quantities of high-quality fruit fly culture media are distributed to the fruit fly labs in a timely manner

  • Helpful, willing to hear feedback from fruit fly labs and can make sure that the fruit fly food is of consistent quality

  • The ideal candidate is reliable, meticulous, and careful in their work

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on various factors, including but not limited to organizational budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The hiring range provided represents The Rockefeller University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

USD $22.00/Hr.

Compensation Range: Max

USD $25.00/Hr.
