Argonne National Laboratory Internal Dosimetrist in Lemont, Illinois

Implements the Internal Dosimetry and Air Monitoring Programs in accordance with regulatory requirements. Completes external dosimetry training to aid the External Dosimetry Group in a backup capacity. Provides professional health physics support. Aids in developing policies, programs, and procedures for occupational radiation protection in R&D and nuclear facility operations. Maintains knowledge of federal and state radiation protection regulations as well as best practices used within the DOE complex. Integrates with the radiological work planning process to ensure radiation exposures to workers and the public are ALARA.

Position Requirements

  • Knowledge of health physics theory and practice, including air sampling strategy and analysis, internal and external dosimetry, and radiation protection standards and regulations.

  • Ability to develop and implement technical documentation to implement radiation protection regulations of radiation monitoring programs, including the establishment of monitoring protocols and procedures for internal dosimetry.

  • Perform assessments of internal radiation exposure for laboratory personnel through monitoring and analysis of bioassay samples, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and internal protocols.

  • Knowledge of in vivo and in vitro bioassay analysis techniques.

  • Hybrid Potential: This position will be hybrid, on-site presence will be required 1-2 days each week.

  • Familiarity with bioassay result analysis techniques and internal dose calculation methodologies.

  • Familiarity with computer software used for dosimetry, shielding, and gamma spectroscopy.

  • Must meet the requirements of the internal dosimetry qualification process, which includes successfully passing an oral board examination. This qualification process is conducted within the initial six months of assuming the position. Successful completion of this process is mandatory for the continuation of employment.

  • Ability to collaborate with operational Health Physics personnel on internal dosimetry investigations.

  • Ability to collaborate with Analytical Services personnel to effectively implement the bioassay monitoring program.

  • Communication skills to effectively convey technical knowledge to workers and laboratory management.

  • Interpersonal skills to maintain psychological safety when communicating dose assessment information to workers.

​Educational requirements:

  • For a PT3 level - Bachelor’s Degree in Health Physics, Radiological Sciences, Nuclear Engineering, or a related field and 4+ years of experience

  • For a PT4 level - Bachelor’s Degree in Health Physics, Radiological Sciences, Nuclear Engineering, or a related field and 6+ years of experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the practical implementation of Internal Dosimetry Program requirements.

  • Experience conducting in vivo and in vitro bioassay analyses.

  • Experience with Internal Dosimetry Software: Familiarity with specialized software used for internal dose assessment and bioassay data analysis, such as IMBA, Genie, or AIDE.

  • Practical Experience in Radiation Protection: Previous work experience in a radiation protection or health physics-related role, particularly in a laboratory or industrial setting.

  • Strong Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills: The ability to analyze complex dosimetry data, identify trends, and troubleshoot issues is essential for effective internal dosimetry assessments.
