Job Title: Arts Dance Instructor

Reports To: Director of Studio Programs

Work Location: Hal Welsh East Area YMCA/Manlius YMCA

FLSA: Non-exempt – Part-time​

Work Schedule: Wed 5- 7:15 pm; Sat 12-2:30 pm

Salary Range: $20/hour

Position Summary:

This position supports the mission and work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization. Under the direction of the Arts Director, the Dance Instructor is a team player who demonstrates strong skills in class and lesson development; organization; interpersonal, verbal and written communication; and collaborative relationships. The Dance Instructor’s responsibilities include lesson planning, class proposals, material lists, attendance and class schedules. The Dance Instructor assures the well-being for each participant in line with YMCA of the USA guidelines and association policies in accordance with their training .

  • Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks:

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop and implement dance lessons that increase the knowledge of dance principles as well as expand the student’s interest in dance.

  • Create a safe and trusting creative environment in the Studio.

  • Ensure the safety of all students.

  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the Studio with a team effort of the class.

  • Communicate respectfully and clearly to all students and parents.

  • Reinforce positive behaviors and creative strides.

  • Handle disruptive behaviors in accordance with the Arts Orientation Packet.

  • Actively participate in promoting the Y-Arts program at the YMCA and in the community.

  • Follow all guidelines and procedures stated in the Arts Orientation Packet.

  • Actively pursue learning opportunities related to art education and character development.

  • Maintain required paperwork for the Arts Director.

  • Sustain open communication between Arts Director and fellow art instructors.

  • Attend mandatory YMCA trainings as/when required.

  • Choreograph dance routines for each class.

  • Measure students for costumes and assist in costume ordering.

  • Put on a session-end recital under the guidance of the Arts Director.

Experience, Education, and Qualifications:

  • A college degree related to the position’s related field preferred (education, dance, etc).

  • Prior experience teaching dance.

  • Prior experience in choreography.

  • Prior experience putting on a recital.

  • Possess and demonstrate excellent organizational, verbal and written communication, interpersonal, decision-making, problem solving and leadership skills.

  • Possess strong experience and skills in their given field of fine arts.

  • Provide examples of personal art work to demonstrate their abilities.

  • Possess and demonstrate ability to work both within a team and independently.

  • Possess and demonstrate the ability to develop and implement meaningful and creative lesson plans appropriate for the targeted age group.

Trainings & Certifications:

  • Must complete online Bloodborne Pathogens and Employee Safety training prior to initial assignment to position.

  • Must complete online Hazard Communication training within the first 90-days of employment.

  • Must attend and complete Listen First and Youth Protection within 90-days of employment.

    Physical Requirements:

    The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Prolonged periods of standing and frequent bending.

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.

  • Will be exposed to illness-causing bacteria and viruses.

    Work Environment:

    This job operates in a recreational and/or educational environment. This role routinely uses standard recreation and/or office equipment. At times, employees may be exposed to undesirable working conditions, communicable infectious diseases, and risk of injury from others. All employees are required to always follow the preventative health policies of the YMCA. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to high.
