COMPENSATION: $75/day for new hires, $85/day returning staff

  

SUMMARY

ASummer CampDay Camp Counselorprovidessupervision and enrichment to a specific group of campers at CampOrkilaon beautiful Orcas Island, WA.ADay Camp Counselor serves as a professional role model for our campers by leading through example and guiding campers through recreational activities that teach life skills, encourage healthy and safe behaviors, and create a positive camper experience.Recreational activities withcampersinclude but are not limitedtoarts and crafts, sports, social recreation, songs, nature hikes, archery, and other games and enrichment activities. Day CampCounselors are supervised by Unit Directors and perform other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Supervises a group of campers.Ensures that all campers are accounted for and safe at all times. 

  2. Facilitates program activities that are developmentallyappropriate,and which promote camper skill and character development.Leads andassistswith facilitation of all-campspecial events. 

  3. Provides leadership and supervision to any developing teen leaders placed with the group.  

  4. Maintainshigh standardsof housekeeping including bathrooms,cabinsand main lodge. 

  5. Assistsin keeping all program equipment in working condition and available. 

  6. Assistsinmaintainingall program areas in a safe and orderly condition. 

  7. Communicates personal or camper needs to supervisorin a timely manner.  

  8. Attendsstaff meetings andtrainings. 

  9. Maintains relevant American Camping Association standards.

  10. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies. 

  11. Other duties as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This joboperatesat a seasonal residential camp, both inside and outdoors.  

  

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

  

While performing the duties of this job, the employeeis regularly required totalk orhear. The employeefrequentlyis required tostand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift store or janitorial products and supplies, up to 50 pounds. 

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

This is a full-time, seasonal position. The usual camp workweek is six days on and one day off, including training, staff meetings, and regular duties. This summer camp position is exempt from minimum wage and overtime regulations per State of Washington wage and hour law. 

TRAVEL

All travelrequiredfor work will be done by YMCA Authorized Drivers.

Qualifications

What we're looking for in an applicant

  1. 16 years of age or older

  2. 0-1 years’ experience with children; camps, childcare, tutoring, or nannying.

  3. Experience planning and implementing group activities.

  4. Ability to model and demonstrate Y values: caring, respect, responsibility and honesty.

  5. TB test by Mantoux method.*

  6. Completion of minimum STARS required training, CPR/First Aid Training*

  7. Cleared Portable Background Check in the statewide registry MERIT.*At hire, or earliest possible training (but no later than 30 days after employment.)At hire, or during onboarding for position.

Preferred Education/Experience

  1. Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.)

  2. High school diploma or the equivalent of one.
