JOB SUMMARY/ACCOUNTABILITY

The Controller reports to the Chief Financial Officer and is responsible for the daily accounting responsibilities of the organization. The Controller is responsible for preparing certain monthly standard journal entries and managing the monthly closing process. As is the case with all members of the Fiscal team, the Controller is responsible for ensuring the safety of the organization's assets, including its good name. You will be part of a team of professionals working to maintain order and transparency for the company's finances, plus part of an organization that is making true impact in the Detroit community.

 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Working with the CFO to ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and year end closings.
  • Responding to inquiries from managers regarding financial results, special reporting requests, etc. on a timely basis.
  • Preparing yearly budgets for each program area and producing forecasts as requested for forward-looking projections.
  • Assisting in developing and implementing new procedures and features to enhance the workflow of the department.
  • Preparing monthly journal entries and workpapers as directed
  • Performing monthly reconciliation activities and oversight of all bank accounts, credit cards, and all other credit liabilities, including end of the month vendor statements.
  • Preparing balance sheets, income statements and other financial statements according to legal and company accounting and financial guidelines
  • Reviewing of assets, liabilities and expenses 
  • Performing other duties as needed to assist in accomplishing the requirements of the Accounting Department and/or the mission of Matrix Human Services.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

  • Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification required.
  • Experience managing the closing process for all or part of an organization.
  • Ability to manage the year-end financial audit plus other program audits that occur during the year.
  • Fund accounting or non-profit accounting experience preferred but not required.
  • Thorough understanding of how the income statement, balance sheet and cash flow fit together for month end statements and forecasting purposes.
  • Ability to stay up on GAAP changes that affect presentation.
  • Demonstrated strong Excel skills, (i.e., v-lookup, subtotals, pivot tables)
  • Comfortable in a diverse environment and enjoy working with people.
  • Be able to partner with operations and provide analytical support and insight.
  • Excellent analytical problem-solving skills and a willingness to take on special projects.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work both independently and as a cross-functional team member.
  • Must be able to turn analysis into insights and effectively communicate the findings and recommendations to key executives and Board Members.

     

WORKING AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
