Our Mission is to perpetuate the wildlife resources of the state, to provide a quality state parks system, and to provide enjoyable and sustainable outdoor recreation opportunities that educate and inspire current and future generations to serve as active stewards of Colorado's natural resources.

The Branding and Communications Section exists to lead the planning, development, creation, implementation and evaluation of creative methods and communications techniques to efficiently communicate CPW programs, products and activities to local, regional and national publics based upon CPW leadership goals. The work unit is responsible for communicating with the public using the agency website, press releases, social media, regulation brochure publications, mass marketing efforts, video, and Colorado Outdoors Magazine and blog. This work unit is also responsible for pricing, production and distribution these materials. The work unit is responsible for overseeing the CPW retail operations, including the online store.

Description of Job

The Social Media Specialist will be tasked to attract and interact with targeted virtual communities and social media users. The Social Media content specialist works in tandem with the Digital Marketing and Social Media Coordinator to develop engaging, high-level social media content for Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s statewide social media channels - which currently have a combined total of nearly 520,000 followers. The role will also capture photo and video content relevant for use on CPW’s flagship social media channels and assist statewide projects and programs as needed. The position travels in-state (when necessary) and is responsible for taking and editing clear, dynamic photos according to goals set by the Communications Supervisor and Digital Marketing and Social Media Coordinator.

This position will provide consistency in brand voice, allowing CPW to share crucial agency conservation, recreation and stewardship concepts across platforms to communicate at a level understandable to the average recreationist or visitor to Colorado.

Expected duties include:

Content development for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn :

Plan, create, publish and share new and unique content on a daily basis that builds meaningful customer connections, increases brand awareness and encourages community members to engage with Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

  • Write copy, design social media graphics, and seek out user-generated content that directly relates to goals as outlined in CPWs social media strategy.

  • Pinpoint long-term campaigns that educate and excite our social media followers in new and invigorating ways.

  • Collaborate with branding and communications team and other departments within CPW to manage reputation, identify key topics and coordinate appropriate social media actions.

  • Create editorial calendars and syndication schedules.

  • Visit statewide locations for taking photos and videos for annual or specific communications campaigns through all seasons.

    Social Media community engagement :

    Be active on all social media apps as the voice of Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

  • Interact with mentions/tags, comment on like social media accounts etc. With a large number of followers, this is highly important to our social media voice and overall our brand as Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

  • Stay up-to-date with trends and implement trends on behalf of CPW when applicable to our brand.

  • Help manage regional/park accounts, maintaining login and password lists, monitoring for branding issues or comments that require higher-level intervention.

  • The role will work to answer common questions, interact with partner posts, reach out to park visitors, wildlife photographers, etc. for permission to share or collaborate, and generally maintain healthy digital relationships with account followers.

    Campaign and Content Planning :

  • Managing output from weekly meetings, maintaining a calendar/list of planned topics and timing for social media posts. Tagging/flagging subject matter experts for species or activity-driven topics as needed for content reviews. Proposing opportunities to develop social media content in line with seasonal or mandated campaigns.

  • Attend weekly ideation with the social media and public information team and participate in creative brainstorms to ensure Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s social media channels continue to innovate. Identify social media content strategies based on annual communication campaigns and emerging topics of agency importance.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications

Six (6) years of professional experience in a business or technical writing position, particularly using digital media tools such as email platforms, website CMS or social media platforms or an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position.

OR

At least two (2) years of professional experience in a business or technical writing position, particularly using digital media tools such as email platforms, website CMS or social media platforms or an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position.

AND

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Creative Writing, English or Marketing or a field of study related to the work assignment.

Substitutions

  • Additional appropriate experience will substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis. Additional appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current or former State experience relevant to this position

  • Current or former Colorado Parks & Wildlife work or volunteer experience

  • Depth of understanding of, and interest in, natural resources topics, including outdoor recreation and wildlife management

  • Experience working in a government role

  • High level of written and oral communications in scientific and/or regulatory fields

    Conditions of Employment

  • State of Colorado residency is required at the time of application.

  • Travel to some regional and section meetings, a few times per year is required.
