University Of Denver Teaching Assistant Professor Or Assistant Professor Of The P in Denver, Colorado

We invite applications for a full-time non-tenure-track faculty position, at the rank of Teaching Assistant Professor or Assistant Professor of the Practice. The position begins on September 1, 2024 and will hold a nine-month appointment over an academic year. The successful candidate will work within the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) in a teaching capacity. In addition, this position will have the exciting opportunity to develop and implement curriculum for an expanded online Systems Engineering program and will report to the Director of the Systems Engineering Graduate Program.

Position Summary

This position is responsible for participating in the implementation of a new Master's program in Systems Engineering. The program requires teaching six Systems Engineering courses during the academic year, with an anticipated course load of two courses per quarter. We seek exceptional faculty who are willing to engage students inside and outside the classroom, deliver active and hands-on learning experiences, work in a non-traditional environment, and authentically support our mission and objectives for diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ - https://ritchieschool.du.edu/about/equity-inclusion).

Teaching Professorial Series

  • Teaching Assistant Professors will be candidates in the first two to seven years of post-doctorate experience with documented potential for excellence in teaching. Appointments at this rank will be made first as a one-year contract renewable yearly for three years, followed by a three-year contract where renewal is contingent on formal performance review. Professor of the Practice Series

  • Assistant Professors of the Practice will be candidates with a Ph.D. in an appropriate field of study and a minimum of three years of relevant experience or candidates with an M.S. degree in an appropriate field of study and a minimum of 11+ years of appropriate industry or equivalent experience with regionally recognized achievements. Essential Functions

  • Develop and teach new/existing online courses, seminars, and workshops with an understanding of the needs for practical Systems Engineering.

  • Participate in the implementation of Systems Engineering program initiatives through collaboration with ECE faculty, RSECS leadership, community stakeholders, and potential corporate partners.
  • Provide service to the department as needed, including mentoring/advising students, supervising capstone/independent study projects.
  • Perform course assessments.
  • Provide services to the school, the university, and the profession. Required Qualifications

  • PhD in engineering; or a Master's degree in Systems Engineering or related fields with 11+ years of:

  • Appropriate industry experience, or

  • Equivalent industry experience with regionally recognized achievements.

  • Evidence of high-quality teaching.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and a teamwork mindset. Preferred Qualifications

  • Teaching experience in a college or university setting, including teaching with modern technology.

  • Teaching experience in professional degree programs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with culturally responsive teaching methods and/or pedagogies to effectively engage broadly diverse student populations.
  • Experience with engineering design processes. Working Environment

  • Standard office environment.

  • Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
  • Noise level is quiet to moderate. Physical Activities

  • Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period of time.

  • Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs. Work Schedule

While the University's administrative offices are open Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, faculty schedules vary from term to term and are based on courses taught, service commitment , and research agendas. The University's academic calendars are posted on the registrar's website (the law school is on a semester system and has a different academic calendar).
