Opportunity: School Social Workers are an essential component to address and remove learning barriers for students. Tapestry has a rapidly growing student support team, where the SSW position will provide a necessary ecological and whole-person lens to our approach in creating successful, engaged, civic minded students. Our SSW will implement systems level, evidence based programs, targeted early intervention, and crisis intervention services, in collaboration with our School Guidance Counselors, Family Support Specialist, Mental Health Counselors, Student Support Team and school administration. This thriving team will provide deeply engaged and comprehensive practice with a foundational knowledge of culture, human behavior, childhood development, and trauma informed care.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Social Work or other related human services field.

  • NYS certification (LMSW, LMHC, LMFT, or other related licensure).

  • 2 years of previous experience working with children and families in marginalized communities preferred.

  • Strong interpersonal skills.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Must be eligible for or hold NYS School Social Worker certification.

Responsibilities

Tier I System Design

  • Collaborate and assist in the development of school wide positive behavioral interventions and supports;

  • Identify and address systemic barriers to learning by serving as a change agent to bring stakeholders together collaboratively, to create an environment that is conducive to effective problem solving and learning;

  • Conduct needs assessments and program monitoring;

  • Facilitate the understanding of familial, cultural and community components of student responses to instruction, learning and academic success;

  • Serve as liaison to students, families and the community and other stakeholders to ensure open communication and ongoing dialogue;

  • Facilitate and coordinate the delivery of mental health and social services, both with the school and across the community at large.

  • Maintain case records and related statistical data;

  • Submits accurate monthly reports electronically on services provided at each school;

Tier II & III (Team collaboration and Individual Student Services)

  • Provide casework assessment services to students and families throughout the Tapestry district from a trauma informed, JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion) restorative practice lens;

  • Provide education to parents regarding a child's physical, social and emotional development, as well as expanding parent knowledge base of RtI practices and strategies;

  • Provide education to parents, teachers and students regarding mental and behavioral health concerns that require additional assistance and support, & potential impact and results of interventions implemented;

  • Connect with families who demonstrate high risk of disengagement through home visits to assess social environment, emotional, physical, and safety needs of students and families;

  • Provide mental health support through self harm assessments such as the ASQ, and other mental health assessments (i.e. - PHQ9, SPIN, SCARED, BTQ, LSC-R, etc.), and assisting with administering self assessment to make appropriate internal and external community referrals;

  • Provide classroom management support through designing and conducting age appropriate Restorative Practice circles on relevant topics (healthy relationships, conflict resolution, friendships, socio-emotional learning) to students throughout the Tapestry district;

  • Support Principals & Student Support Teams in each school by facilitating restorative practice circles with students & families in conflict to resolve issues, repair harm and restore relationships;

  • Identify families in need through continued engagement and assessment with families throughout the district and providing community linkages to referrals to at-risk students & families;

Tier IV (Crisis Intervention and Complex Problem referrals)

  • Assess and make distinctions between imminent danger to a student or threat to the student body, and determine need for critical (crisis) services;

  • When crisis events precipitate at a micro, mezzo or macro level, implement and continually evaluate the Tapestry district crisis intervention plan appropriate to the level of care necessary;

  • Provide direction and education to students, families and staff around acute crisis to minimize or prevent student harm to self or others;

  • Provide short term crisis intervention to address life trauma (i.e. death, divorce, homelessness, family violence, local and national tragedies);

  • Work with schools throughout the district to implement attendance policy and programs and support compliance of compulsory attendance law;

  • Serve as mandated reporter for cases of child abuse/neglect and provide follow up with CPS, APS and other agencies as necessary and appropriate;

  • Support building leaders by creating parent partnerships with students and families in a confidential and caring manner, and help to bridge gaps between families and Tapestry.

Other Duties

  • Comply with NYS professional standards of Mental Health practice (NYS Education Law VIII, Section 6509, Part 29).

  • Comply with the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics.

  • Participates in district level and school based professional learning activities for continued professional growth.

  • Perform other duties as assigned to support Family & Community Engagement activities.
